My practice is concerned with mass produced objects which are usually considered to threaten the authenticity and integrity of craftsmanship. Rather than overlooking these objects which are widely regardes as banal, I try to remove their function and appreciate their artistic and aesthetic value. My work varies from abstract paintings/sculptures which develop into a more representational image where the abstraction still plays an important role in terms of background and texture of the work.

JUSTIN CROW
‘Untitled [Baron’s Spauldrons]’ - 2010
An adjustable sizing set of interlocking soft-furnished spauldrons with D-ring tensioning straps to fit, adorned with ~5000 copper & black nails. Predominantly machined with all finishings hand stitched.

‘Untitled [Duct Tape Sphere]’ - 2009
A 1:1 replica of the artist’s body executed in white fabric tape suspended within an Icosahedral geodesic sphere, also constructed in white fabric tape, mounted in mid-air by tape-wrapped cord and frame secured to surrounding surfaces.

‘Untitled [100 Book-Boxes]’ - 2010
100 hand-made books, containing fragments of found and artist-suthored text. Each one is individually numbered & bound with a single strand of the artist’s hair, to which a single fishing hook is tied.

‘Untitled [1/3 Scale Dolls]’ - 2009
1:3 Scale replicas of the artist’s body, made from a variety of materials including rust-stained cotton, old jeans, drugs baggies, & suiting wool, & stuffed with cigarette ash, salt, flour & dust.

‘Untitled [Nail Glove]’ - 2009
A millimetre-accurate, hand-made glove to fit the artists left hand. Produced over 4 days & entirely hand-stitched, with around 250 steel tacks individually secured with two crossing drop stitches. Minute-accurate logs of the artists activity were kept for the duration of the work.

‘Untitled [Duct Tape Body]’ - 2008
A 1:1 replica of the artist’s body executed in white fabric tape. Made in four sections by wrapping the artist’s body in a layer of cling film and several layers of tape, which were then reassembled in situ to create a hollow ‘shell’.
